Oktoberfest
Ein Prosit, ein Prosit
Der Gemütlichkeit
Ein Prosit, ein Prosit
Der GemütlichkeitOANS ZWOA DREI, G'SUFFA!
Robbie Williams - Angels
Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive
Four Non Blondes - What's Up
John Denver - (Take Me Home) Country Roads
Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline
Doris Day und Frank De Vol - Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera Sera)

Planning to visit the Munich Oktoberfest? Besides wearing the traditional dirndl (Bavarian women's traditional attire) and taking selfies, there are numerous ways to truly immerse yourself in the Oktoberfest and Bavarian culture. Please, forget about what you’ve seen on Instagram. Let's explore this unique experience together!
Oktoberfest, October Celebration? Wait! It's September!
The Oktoberfest's dates vary each year but typically fall in mid-September to early October. This grand event takes place on the Theresienwiese meadow in Munich. The 2023 Munich Oktoberfest has begun on September 16th and will run until October 3rd. Despite its name containing "October," the Munich Oktoberfest is primarily held in September. This might not come as a surprise, due to its historical and traditional origins.
The Munich Oktoberfest originated in 1810 when Bavarian King Ludwig I (Ludwig Karl August) married Princess Theresia Massacher. To celebrate this royal wedding, the Munich city government organized a large-scale celebration on October 12th, inviting the entire city's residents. This celebration included food, music, horse racing, and various entertainment activities. The event's success turned it into an annual traditional festival, and the former horse racing grounds were later named after Queen Theresia, eventually becoming the Theresienwiese meadow, the current venue for the Oktoberfest. To ensure better weather and longer daylight hours for outdoor beer tents and rides, the Oktoberfest's dates were moved up to September.
My First German Song
This is probably the first German song I can sing! No matter which beer tent you're in, you'll definitely have the chance to hear this song, "Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit."
Ein Prosit, ein Prosit
Der Gemütlichkeit
Ein Prosit, ein Prosit
Der GemütlichkeitOANS ZWOA DREI, G'SUFFA!
(Translate)
Cheers, cheers,
this pleasant delight.
Cheers, cheers,
this pleasant delight. One, two, three, bottoms up!
"Prosit" means cheers in Bavarian dialect, and "gemütlichkeit" represents a pleasant time. The entire song repeats this line, and at the end, "OANS ZWOA DREI, G'SUFFA!" means counting one, two, three, to encourage everyone to finish their beer. Besides this song, there are many other rhyming songs like "allee allee allee" and "Zicke Zacke Zicke Zacke Hoi Hoi Hoi." Still worried about not fitting in? Don't be, as the following international hits are also popular in Oktoberfest tents.
Robbie Williams - Angels
Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive
Four Non Blondes - What's Up
John Denver - (Take Me Home) Country Roads
Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline
Doris Day und Frank De Vol - Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera Sera)
If you hear these songs, grab your beer and sing along!
What to Wear to the Party?
While you're eagerly looking forward to enjoying the Oktoberfest, some people are still pondering over "What should I wear to attend the party?" Traditionally, men opt for leather shorts (Lederhosen), typically paired with a simple cotton shirt or long-sleeved shirt, and a leather belt. On the other hand, women wear traditional Bavarian female attire known as the Dirndl, which includes a one-piece dress, a short blouse, ribbons, and an apron. To blend in, many visitors also choose to dress in Bavarian traditional attire when heading to the Oktoberfest for the festivities.
Walking down the streets of Munich, you'll easily spot shops specialized in traditional clothing, with prices ranging from 20 euros to 2000 euros. Besides considerations like fabric, tailoring, and color choice, when selecting a Dirndl, it's important to adhere to the principles of cultural respect. Traditionally, the length of the dress is recommended to be knee-length. This guideline not only aligns with tradition but also allows for more comfortable dancing and enjoyment at the Oktoberfest.
Traditional attire is just one option, and you can also wear your comfortable clothes when attending the festival.
A Carnival for Everyone
In addition to the adrenaline-pumping roller coasters, free-fall rides, and bumper cars you'd expect, there are plenty of cool amusement rides here, and Toboggan is one of them.
Standing on the conveyor belt, you need to maintain your balance and slide up eight meters. I know, sliding upwards might not make any sense, but after a few beers, what can't you do, right? Then, you climb up the spiral staircase, slip your feet into a burlap sack, and slide down a wooden chute before regaining your composure.
Of course, whether you're watching these games or experiencing them firsthand, it's both a lot of fun!
Sounds Great! But What Should I Keep in Mind?
There are security checks at the entrance, and backpacks and large bags are not allowed. Leave unnecessary items at home. (The maximum capacity for a small bag is 3 liters, with dimensions not exceeding 20 cm x 15 cm x 10 cm.)
You can bring your own drinks, but they are not allowed inside the tents or beer gardens. Additionally, please refrain from taking beer from the tents or beer gardens outside.
Drink responsibly! The beer served at the Oktoberfest comes in a Maß (pronounced "mass"), which is about 1 liter. It has an alcohol content of approximately 5% - 6%, so be mindful not to overindulge, as intoxication can quickly set in.
Food and drinks can be a bit pricey! In 2023, beer prices at the Oktoberfest range from 12.60 euros to 14.90 euros, which is an average increase of 6.12% compared to last year.
Ladies, safety matters too! The "Sichere Wiesn" (Safe Oktoberfest) program offers security for women attending the festival. At the service center near the Bavaria statue, behind the Schottenhamel tent's Erste Hilfe (First Aid) entrance, you'll find a "Safe Space." This space is available for girls and women in emergencies, when feeling unsafe, lost, or threatened.
In this joyful and culturally rich event, you've now learned a few quick secrets to blend in seamlessly with the Oktoberfest and Bavarian culture. Whether it's September or October, this grand Munich Beer Festival awaits visitors from all around. Dress appropriately, learn a German song, enjoy thrilling rides, but also remember to drink responsibly to ensure you make it home safely. Remember, put down your phone and go experience it firsthand!
